Andrew Levitas

Andrew Levitas

Producer / Director

The New York Times declared Andrew Levitas “has the Midas touch” when describing his continued work across multiple creative platforms. A mainstay on the New York and European art scene for over two decades, Levitas’ Metalwork Installations® are widely regarded as a breakthrough in connecting photography, sculpture, and contemporary art. Levitas’ “Organic Abstractions” (paintings built from homemade pigments and organic materials – in some cases entire trees) have also received critical acclaim. Levitas is one of only a handful of American artists ever accepted to show with the prestigious Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Select exhibitions include: Metalwork Photography®: A Survey which was the first ever single artist exhibition in Phillip’s Berkeley Square in London, Metalwork Photography®: Sculptures at Phillips de Pury & Co. in Manhattan. Recent acquisitions include The National Museum Wales and 10 Downing Street. 2021 museum exhibitions include Athens and Lisbon.

Minamata, Levitas’ latest directing project which he also wrote, stars Johnny Depp, Bill Nighy, and Hiroyuki Sanada. The film follows photojournalist W. Eugene Smith (Depp) who travels to the Japanese coastal town of Minamata to expose corporate negligence and government cover-ups by documenting one of the world’s most devastating environmental disasters. David Friend of Vanity Fair detailed the film as “A deadly health crisis. Venal leaders profiting as the public suffers. An intrepid journalist trying to expose the cover-up. Andrew Levitas’ powerful, impassioned Minamata is the movie for this moment.” Minamata had its gala premiere at Berlinale 2020 and will be distributed theatrically by MGM in 2021.

Prior to Minamata, Levitas’ wrote and directed Lullaby which stars Amy Adams, Richard Jenkins, Terrence Howard, Jennifer Hudson and Garrett Hedlund. The film, an exploration of patients’ rights, was described by Pete Hammond (Deadline) as a “strong human drama” with “Jenkins a true actor’s actor, delivering a very Oscar-worthy supporting turn.”

Levitas has also produced The White Crow (Ralph Fiennes, Adele Exarchopoulos), My Zoe (Julie Delpy, Daniel Brühl, Gemma Arterton), Georgetown (Christoph Waltz, Vanessa Redgrave, Annette Bening), Farming (Kate Beckinsale, Gugu Mbatha-Raw), The Gateway (Bruce Dern, Olivia Munn, Frank Grillo), The Quarry (Michael Shannon, Shea Whigham), Last Moment of Clarity (Samara Weaving, Udo Kier, Brian Cox), Flower (Zoey Deutch) and The Art of Getting By (Emma Roberts, Freddie Highmore) among others.

A professor at New York University, Levitas maintains studios in New York and London. He is a Global Patron of The Wilderness Foundation, an Ambassador of Tusk Trust and works closely with the United Nations and the European Environmental Bureau.
